“Love is wiser than Philosophy, though she is wise, and mightier than Power, though he be mighty.” In Oscar Wilde’s The Nightingale and the Rose, a nightingale sacrifices her life to bloom the most perfect red rose, only for it to be rejected by society, thrown into the gutter, and crushed under chariot wheels. Disillusioned, the young student renounces love and returns to his cold philosophy. This piece is a gentle, modern sequel to that nineteenth-century tragedy.

At its heart is a Victorian-style vintage cameo of exquisite provenance. Atop an intricately detailed, gold-plated filigree frame with hollowed-out carvings, Wilde's doomed flower escapes its tragic fate. Instead of being trampled, it is re-sculpted within a deep, sculptural indigo resin background, growing into a two-tone blue and white rose—calmer, wiser, and beautifully self-possessed.
